A Message from Dr. McMillan
In clinical medicine, I always think in layers of therapy rather than searching for a single solution.
When an intervention is simple, low risk, and biologically plausible, there is often little downside to incorporating it alongside evidence-based strategies.
Zinc and quercetin are a good example, widely available, accessible to almost everyone, and a practical addition to a broader approach to supporting health.

Locked Out: Why the Zinc and Quercetin Idea Went Untested for Five Years
Authors: Dr. Philip McMillan, John McMillan
RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, the enzyme viruses use to copy themselves, is shared across coronaviruses, influenza, dengue, and more.
Zinc blocks this enzyme, but only inside cells, where oral supplements cannot deliver it in sufficient quantity.
Ionophores like quercetin, green tea catechins, and curcumin ferry zinc across the cell membrane to the target.
No trial has tested this early, outpatient combination likely because unpatentable compounds attract no commercial research funding.
Why this is important: Slowing viral replication early buys the immune system time before peak viral load. A cheap zinc plus ionophore pairing could add one protective layer against many RNA viruses, yet remains unstudied because money follows patents. Readers are left with a plausible mechanism and no definitive human answer.

Beetroot juice offers small but real boosts to strength, sprint speed, and oxygen use in athletes
Guy Guppy, Kingston University
Meta-analysis of 33 studies and over 500 athletes found small-to-moderate performance gains from beetroot juice.
Dietary nitrate converts to nitric oxide, relaxing blood vessels and improving oxygen delivery to working muscles.
Best results came from 70 to 140ml concentrate, taken roughly two hours before exercise.
Benefits extend beyond sport, helping COPD patients improve blood pressure and physical capacity.
Why this is important: Nitrate rich foods deliver a measurable, if modest, edge for explosive strength and endurance. Timing and dose matter more than most athletes realise. The same vascular effects that aid sprinters may also help people managing chronic lung disease, widening beetroot's potential well past the running track.

A eight-section deep dive through gut immunology, barrier injury, microbiome disruption, and the post-pandemic data dashboard
The Intestine as a Pandemic Amplifier is a comprehensive, data-led course - built around three drivers: repeated spike exposure, barrier injury, and microbiome disruption.
With seven modules, an interactive data dashboard, and Q&A, it takes you section by section through nine years of NHS admission data - so you understand what the numbers show and what they don't.
This is for those who want the evidence tested - not conclusions sold.
MEDICAL NEWS IN BRIEF
NEWS HIGHLIGHTS
🚥 Melatonin may modestly reduce chronic muscle and joint pain, especially when sleep problems coexist: Millions live with persistent muscle and joint pain that existing drugs only partly ease. A cheap, familiar sleep aid showing genuine, if modest, pain relief matters, particularly for patients whose pain and poor sleep feed each other. Researchers frame melatonin as an add-on, not a replacement therapy.. [SOURCE]
🚥 Metabolic syndrome accelerates brain ageing, with more components adding more years to brain age: One in four adults carries metabolic syndrome, often without knowing its reach extends to the brain. Linking high blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol to measurable brain ageing gives people a concrete reason to act, since every one of these five components responds to lifestyle change. [SOURCE]
🚥 Former professional soccer players show reduced brain volume and higher rates of depression and anxiety: Heading a football looks harmless, yet repeated impacts may leave lasting marks on the ageing brain. Finding smaller brain volumes and far higher rates of depression and anxiety in retired players raises urgent questions for a sport played by millions of children worldwide. Objective cognitive tests, notably, showed no difference.
🚥Eating one avocado daily for six months lowered harmful LDL particles in adults with abdominal obesity: Chronic inflammation drives a vast range of diseases, from diabetes to neurodegeneration. Immune cells called regulatory T cells naturally keep this in check, and scientists are engineering them into precision therapies that could restore long-term immune tolerance rather than suppress immunity broadly. [SOURCE]
🚥 Poor muscle health combined with obesity sharply raises the risk of developing type 2 diabetes: Weight alone tells only part of the diabetes story. Showing that weak, wasting muscle paired with excess fat multiplies risk far beyond obesity alone reframes prevention around strength, not just the scale. For younger women especially, protecting muscle mass may prove as vital as managing body weight. [SOURCE]
🚥 New WHO guidelines say up to 45% of dementia risk could be prevented or delayed: Dementia can feel like an unavoidable fate, yet nearly half of cases trace back to factors people and governments can change. Putting air pollution and untreated hearing loss alongside familiar risks like inactivity and high blood pressure widens the path to prevention well before symptoms ever appear.
