COVID-19 STORM and Heart Failure
Unraveling Serious Cardiac Complications of COVID-19 Vaccination
A Message from Dr. McMillan
Heart failure is an issue that I am passionate about because a significant number of patients under my care had a rapid deterioration in function. It is very difficult to specify the exact cause; however, I remain suspicious about the likely relationship to spike-induced inflammation (STORM). In this week's article, the affected patient only recovered because of the use of steroids. It is unlikely to be used for most people because a biopsy is rarely done. Once the damage occurs, it cannot be reversed.
Sincerely,
Dr. Philip McMillan

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS
COVID-19
A 78-year-old woman developed heart failure symptoms after receiving her second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.
The patient's condition worsened rapidly, leading to hospitalization and diagnosis of acute decompensated heart failure with reduced ejection fraction.
Doctors found evidence of myocardial inflammation and fibrosis, suggesting a potential link to the COVID-19 vaccine.
The case highlights the need for vigilance in monitoring elderly patients for potential cardiac complications following COVID-19 vaccination.
Why is this Important: Vigilance is crucial when monitoring elderly patients post-COVID-19 vaccination, as this case study reveals a potential link between the vaccine and acute heart failure in a 78-year-old woman. The findings underscore the importance of carefully assessing cardiac health in older individuals following vaccination to promptly identify and manage complications.

DISEASE
WHO declared mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on July 23, 2022, due to its rapid spread.
Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is caused by the mpox virus and spreads through close contact with infected individuals.
The PHEIC declaration aims to coordinate international responses, increase research efforts, and improve access to vaccines and treatments.
Since the declaration, global mpox cases have declined significantly, with over 87,000 cases reported in 111 countries.
Why is this Important: The WHO's declaration of mpox as a global health emergency underscores the importance of international coordination and resource mobilization to contain the outbreak. This decision will accelerate research, improve access to vaccines and treatments, and strengthen surveillance efforts, ultimately helping to protect public health worldwide.

HEALTH
AI algorithm achieves 98% accuracy in predicting various diseases by analyzing tongue color using machine learning techniques.
The system can diagnose conditions including diabetes, stroke, anemia, asthma, liver issues, COVID-19, and gastrointestinal problems.
Researchers used 5,260 images to train the algorithm and 60 patient tongue images for testing.
The method combines modern AI technology with a 2,000-year-old practice from traditional Chinese medicine.
Why is this Important: Merging ancient wisdom with cutting-edge technology, this breakthrough demonstrates the potential for rapid, non-invasive disease diagnosis. The 98% accurate AI algorithm could revolutionize healthcare by providing quick, affordable screenings, potentially leading to earlier interventions and improved patient outcomes across a wide range of conditions.

Romosozumab, a new bone-building drug for osteoporosis, has been approved for use in the UK.
The drug works by stimulating bone formation and reducing bone breakdown, increasing bone mineral density.
Romosozumab is administered as a monthly injection for 12 months, followed by other osteoporosis treatments.
Clinical trials showed significant reduction in fracture risk, especially in postmenopausal women with severe osteoporosis.
Why is this Important: Romosozumab's approval marks a significant advancement in osteoporosis treatment. By effectively building bone and reducing fracture risk, this drug offers hope to millions suffering from severe osteoporosis. Its unique mechanism and impressive clinical results could potentially transform the management of this debilitating condition, improving quality of life for many patients.
