A Message from Dr. McMillan
Rapid vaccine deployment took priority, while those harmed by Covid vaccines were too often treated as collateral damage.
Public health cannot rebuild trust until it acknowledges them, investigates what happened and ensures that it cannot happen again.

Vaccine Injured: Thousands of Canadians Filed Claims. Only 252 Were Approved
Authors: Dr. Philip McMillan, John McMillan
Canada received 3,557 vaccine injury claims from 2021 to 2025, approved 252, and granted just 11 of 551 appeals.
A four-day hearing in Ottawa in September 2026 let about 50 injured Canadians testify publicly.
Without objective biological markers, proving a vaccine caused an injury rather than exacerbating a pre-existing condition, remains remains extremely difficult.
Reported claims may be only the visible tip, with many suspected injuries never formally reported or connected to vaccination.
Why this is important: Vaccine injury programs exist to maintain public trust when rare harms occur. When fewer than one in five assessed claims succeed and appeals almost never do, injured people are left without support, and confidence in public health systems erodes. Transparent, evidence-based compensation protects both patients and future vaccination efforts.

Aging brains tend to blend related memories together rather than simply forgetting them
Ian McDonough, Binghamton University
Older adults more often recalled wrong but related details, like matching a face to the incorrect paired image.
Young, middle-aged and older adults were scanned while learning face-image pairs, resting 20 minutes, then taking recognition tests.
Older brains showed less consistent neural patterns across the learning, resting and recall phases of the memory task.
Surprisingly, when older adults did reactivate original brain patterns, they were even more likely to confuse memories.
Why this is important: Memory problems in later life are often assumed to be simple forgetting. Showing that aging brains instead mix up related experiences points to a variety of causes and fixes, such as exercise, mindfulness, brain stimulation or smartphone cues, which could help older adults keep memories accurate and distinct.
EDUCATION
This comprehensive data-led course focuses on the intestine as a pandemic amplifier. It is built around a eight-section deep dive through gut immunology, barrier injury, microbiome disruption, and the post-pandemic data dashboard
The Intestine as a Pandemic Amplifier is a comprehensive, data-led course - built around three drivers: repeated spike exposure, barrier injury, and microbiome disruption.
With seven modules, an interactive data dashboard, and Q&A, it takes you section by section through nine years of NHS admission data - so you understand what the numbers show and what they don't.
This is for those who want the evidence tested.
MEDICAL NEWS IN BRIEF
NEWS HIGHLIGHTS
🚥 Ancient smallpox DNA from Chilean mummies reveals how the virus reached and evolved in the Americas: Smallpox killed roughly 30% of those it infected and devastated Indigenous populations after European contact. Reading its ancient genetic code clarifies how the disease arrived and changed over time, sharpening our understanding of viral evolution while confirming that preserved remains pose no risk of resurrecting this eradicated killer.
🚥 Eating a traditional Nordic diet is linked to longer life and lower chronic disease risk: Heart disease, diabetes and liver disease share many preventable risk factors rooted in diet. Evidence that everyday Nordic foods improve these markers and are linked to longer life offers a practical alternative to the Mediterranean diet, especially in colder climates. Most of the survival data is observational.
🚥 Different strains of a common airway bacterium shape how air pollution raises serious infection risk: Pneumococcal bacteria cause pneumonia, meningitis and bloodstream infections, especially in children and older adults. Knowing which strains flare up after pollution spikes, and when, could let health systems predict outbreaks, target vaccines more precisely and make a stronger case for cleaner air as a tool against infectious disease. 🚥 Reduced blood flow in the brain may help explain mental fatigue in long COVID: Cognitive fatigue is one of the most disabling long COVID symptoms, yet it is often dismissed because standard tests look normal. Linking it to measurable changes in brain blood flow gives patients objective validation and points researchers toward circulation-focused treatments worth testing in larger trials. [SOURCE]
🚥 A molecule made by healthy gut bacteria helps block a leading cause of food poisoning: Campylobacter sickens millions each year, and drug resistance is making it harder to treat. Finding that a natural gut molecule starves it of energy points toward probiotic or dietary defenses instead of antibiotics alone. The evidence so far comes from mice and ferrets, not people. 🚥 Researchers propose that the aging brain is adapting for wisdom, not simply declining: How we picture brain aging shapes how society treats older adults. Reframing healthy aging as adaptation rather than loss highlights older people's strengths in mentoring and sharpens the line between normal aging and Alzheimer's disease. It remains a proposed framework, though, and still needs testing. [SOURCE]
